Gravely Hill Cemetery

Adopted and cared for by the Gravely Hill Friends, Inc., this cemetery is located on the old homestead of Miles Price, a Confederate veteran who gave the burial plot to family and any Confederate veteran who wished to be buried there. Twenty-five Confederate veterans (and the number continues to grow) are known to be interred within the cemetery. It is probable that Gravely Hill was also the location of Camp Finnegan. After the capture of the site by Union Forces, it later became know as Camp Shaw.

The cemetery is an important and vital part of Jacksonville's history. Miles Price, a lumber baron and Confederate soldier, owned thousands of acres of land between the cemetery and the St. John River. His homestead was on the land that is now called Gravely Hill Cemetery. His will stated that any Civil War veteran who wished to be buried there would be allowed without cost.

In 2008, the Jacksonville Historic Preservation Commission designated Gravely Hill Cemetery as a local landmark site. Congratulations to the preserverance of the Gravely Hill Friends for making this happen.
