The Moncrief Cemetery District consists of 6 historic cemeteries, all of which are located in the Moncrief Road/ Edgewood Avenue area. Two of the cemeteries are privately held (New Mt. Herman and Greenwood) while the other four (Memorial, Sunset Memorial, Pinehurst, and Mt. Olive) are under the maintenance care of the City of Jacksonville.
In 1996, Environmental Services, Inc. (ESI) contracted with the City of Jacksonville to prepare an evaluation of the four historic cemeteries utilized by the local African-American community since the early twentieth century. ESI focused on mapping the graves in the four cemeteries and recording the inscriptions on the markers. It also involved the identification of historic features within each cemetery.
The links below will take you to the maps and listings of these four cemeteries. The lists are in no way complete. Many of the graves are markerless, making identification of the person buried there impossible.
If you have family buried in any of these cemeteries or know someone who does, please look over these lists. If you do not find your relatives name, or if their information is incomplete, please fill out the Missing Persons form found below.
